The Knox School’s Service Learning Class hosted a heartwarming 5K Dog Walk on Friday, April 26th, raising approximately $800 for Hope for Cleo Animal Rescue, a local non-profit dedicated to rescuing abandoned and homeless dogs.

Organized by the School’s Service Learning Class under the guidance of Mrs. Gail Roach, the event brought together 35 students and staff members, eight faculty dogs, three volunteers from Hope for Cleo, and five adorable rescue pups from the shelter. Participants walked a scenic 5K route throughout the school campus, creating a paw-sitive atmosphere of community and support for animals in need.

“I was particularly touched by the number of students that wanted to help with the event,” shared Mrs. Roach, Service Learning Coordinator. “Seeing the students’ reaction when the puppies arrived was priceless. The students were able to hold the puppies while they walked, and it was a wonderful experience for them.”

Funds raised will directly benefit Hope for Cleo’s mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless dogs, with a particular focus on pregnant dogs, nursing mothers, and underaged orphaned puppies who face the highest risk in overpopulated shelters. The money will go towards transportation, food, and vital veterinary care for these vulnerable animals.

The success of the event is attributed to the generous support of RES Home Care in Bohemia and the Knox School’s Falcon’s Nest school store, which assisted in selling event t-shirts worn by participants. Notably, the event inspired one student to volunteer with Hope for Cleo this summer, while others expressed a newfound desire to get involved with their local animal shelters.

This 5K Dog Walk exemplifies The Knox School’s commitment to service learning, fostering compassion, responsibility, and a sense of community amongst the student body, while making a positive impact on the lives of animals in need.
